A Young Carer is anyone, including children and adults, who looks after a family member, partner, or friend who needs help because of their illness, frailty, disability, mental health problem, or addiction, and cannot cope without their support.
At our school, we recognise the important role that Young Carers play at home and the impact this can have on their wellbeing, learning, and daily life. We are committed to ensuring that all Young Carers feel supported, understood, and valued within our school community.
We provide a range of support for Young Carers across all year groups, from our youngest pupils in Primary to our students in Secondary and Sixth Form. This includes:
- Regular Young Carers group sessions, where students can meet in a safe and supportive environment to connect with others, share their experiences, and take part in activities that focus on wellbeing, resilience, and self-care.
- Check-ins and mentoring, offering an opportunity to discuss any challenges they are facing, celebrate their achievements, and ensure their voices are heard.
- Flexible pastoral support, including someone they can speak to at any time during the school day if they need help, advice, or just someone to listen.
- Opportunities to take part in activities and trips that give them time to relax and enjoy themselves away from their caring responsibilities.
- Links with external agencies and local Young Carer networks, ensuring families can access wider support if needed.
As a school, we are working towards achieving the Young Carers in School Award, demonstrating our commitment to recognising and supporting the needs of Young Carers in our community.
If you think your child may be a Young Carer and would benefit from additional support, or if you would like more information, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.
