A Young Carer is anyone, including children and adults, who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs help because of their illness, frailty, disability, a mental health problem or an
addiction and cannot cope without their support.
Our Young Carers group has been running in our school since 2023. Our group currently has 13 members from Years 1 to 6. We meet every month on a Friday, providing a safe and supportive space for Young Carers to connect, share their experiences, and have their voices heard. Beyond these meetings, all Young Carers know they can always come to me in school for a chat or support whenever they need it.
Each session begins with a check-in, allowing members to reconnect and share both positive moments and any challenges they’ve faced. As a group, we discuss these experiences, offer support, and celebrate one another’s achievements. We then move on to our session’s theme, which is always linked to our school values. Some of our activities include Positive Postcards, Pocket Hug Buddies, Games Sessions and Carousel Activities, where our Year 6 members take on mentoring roles. Every so often, we might even treat ourselves to some Chocolate Chip Cookies!
As a school, we are also working towards achieving the Young Carers in School Award, demonstrating our commitment to supporting Young Carers and ensuring they feel valued within our school community.
It is a pleasure to lead this group!
If you think your child could benefit from being part of this group, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
